Currently a trial, funded by the Government's Technology Strategy Board, will see 100 smart fortwo electric drives take to the streets.
Powered solely by electric and charged using any standard three pin plug, the smart fortwo electric drive emits no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, unburned hydro-carbons, particulate matter or any harmful substances. In fact, it emits nothing at all.
It's good on your pocket too, clocking up the equivalent of 275 mpg-that's less than £2 for every 84 miles, saving you up to 80% in fuel costs when compared to a petrol smart (no slouch itself when it comes to fuel economy)
What's more, with no engine oil, spark plugs or exhaust, service and maintenance costs are refreshingly low.
As for safety, smart fortwo electric drive retains all the equipment you'd find on a regular smart. It has ESP, ABS, multiple airbags, and seat belt pre-tensioners-not to mention smart's tried and tested tridion safety cell.
Range between charges: 84 miles (NEDC). During average urban driving, range can extend to over 100 miles.
Time taken to fully charge: 8 hours
Acceleration: 0-38 in 6.5 seconds
Transmission: Single-speed automatic
Engine/Output: 41 hp magneto-electric motor
Top Speed: 62 mph (electronically limited)
C02 (Tailpipe emissions): zero g/km
Fuel Efficiency: Equivalent to 275 mpg
